Anne Garrett has done it again.

Running the Carlsbad 5000 this weekend, the 81-year-old Garrett set an age-group record in the 5K. She finished in 28:37, shaving nearly a minute off the previous age-group record of 29:23.

If her name rings a bell, it’s because this is her second age-group record set this year alone. In February (back when she was only 80) she set the half marathon record for her age group, running a 2:13:23 at the Surf City Half Marathon in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Garrett’s 5K in Carlsbad, just down the road from her home in Oceanside, Calif., came at a 9:12/mile pace.

In a recent interview with Competitor, Garrett revealed she only started running nine years ago. Before that, she was a race walker and assistant race walking coach for a friend’s walking group called Walk This Way.

Along with running races, Garrett is also a spokeswoman for the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation, a Southern California-based nonprofit that aims to incorporate regular physical fitness into the daily lives of youths.
